WordCamp Canada buzz, innovation & opportunities for sponsors

WordCamp Canada seems genuinely to be creating some buzz!

At WordCamp Phoenix, everyone was talking about WordCamp Canada.

It made me especially happy because I know some of their organizers and the hard work they are putting into it.

Two things I love about the different approach WordCamp Canada is taking especially are the focus on Indigenous Peoples in tech, and in generally, soliciting focused topics from speaker applicants, and a step toward a possible evolution of the WordCamp ecosystem into larger, regional, topic focused camps instead of the same general camp everywhere.

The way the WordCamp Canada team is thinking about WordCamp is exciting and I hope they succeed as much as I believe they will.

But what we need now to make it happen is commitment from the wider sponsorship community.

In a number of ways, we are attempting to re-vision what a WordCamp can be.

  • WC-EH is national/regional rather than city specific. This approach reduces the load for local organizers and allows collaboration across wider regions.
  • This is also potentially both economically and ecologically more viable, with fewer but larger camps, less repetition and speaker burnout, less travel, etc.
  • Fewer Camps should mean less demand but better return for sponsors, though the cost per event will be higher due to the increased number of attendees.
  • The organizers are attempting to provide coherent themes/topics for the sessions in their call for speakers to give shape to the conference.
  • The indigenous strand which forms part of our theming seems to be resonating as a welcome innovation. The challenge is now to attract speakers and panelists to make this meaningful.
  • Additional to our call for speakers, we have also put out a call for panelists in an attempt to stimulate interesting conversations on the conference themes.
  • We are actively supporting companies in planning team meetups around the event.

We have tried to be imaginative in our sponsorship prospectus, providing a range of opportunities and cost levels. A shared exhibitor booth is available from as little as $1,000 and we have also included a variety of ‘sponsorship plugins’ that would help make this a WordCamp to remember.

If you are a potential sponsor, please reach out now via our sponsorship page.

And if you are not yourself in a position to offer sponsorship but know someone who might, please encourage them to look at this opportunity.

Help us to make this exciting and ground-breaking event happen!
